Homegrown Tomatoes - Nothing in the world like homegrown tomatoes!

We want to welcome Fresh & Local, LLC to the Peddler's Son Produce extended family of vendors! Jaime Zavala and his family, based out of Stanfield, AZ, are growing our pesticide-free cluster tomatoes.

Our customers have asked for more locally grown produce to support their sustainability programs as well as the local economy. Here at Peddler's Son Produce, we're doing the same. We're creating a program that outlines not only locally grown produce, but things we're doing to help our people and the environment.

What do your sustainability programs include? What is most important to you?

We'd love to hear from you to help you in your efforts.

Yankee Fan?!

For today, Mark Damato, our Vice President of Retail Sales, is a Yankee fan. You see, at the beginning of baseball season Mark made a bet with Aliza, our human resource representative. The loser wears the winning team's apparel. Aliza just happens to be a Yankee fan and Mark a Red Sox fan.

Our fellow team members think Mark looks much better in blue than red.

Aliza would like to thank Mark for being a good sport and also says 'In your face!'

Ahhhh. The spirit of competition lives at Peddler's Son Produce.

Sweeeeet Tomatoes!

We're really excited about our new partnership with Desert Glory. Starting next week, we will sell Desert Glory Yellow Cherry Tomatoes and Grape Tomatoes exclusively. These really are the sweetest and best tomatoes I've tasted.

The tomatoes are grown year round and are consistently priced. All of the tomatoes are vine-ripened and have a shelf life of 21 days. Remember to store tomatoes at room temperature in a shaded area and never refrigerate.

Still not sure? Give me a call and I'm happy to stop by with a sample for you to try for yourself!

Der Kaffee Kuchen is hosting the 2009 Oktoberfest on the 2nd and 3rd of October at the Suprise Baseball Stadium. Lots of great food, dancing, contests and music direct from Germany featuring "Zwei Schwarzwaldmusikanten Band". Great fun for the family as it cools off for $5.00 per person and kids under 12 are free. My wife goes to Germany on business evry year and attends Oktoberfest. I have taken her to Der Kaffee Kuchen for dinner and she says it is just like being back in Germay which just happens to be her favorite destination. So if you are looking for some great family fun this weekend check it out and support a local reataurant.

It's Football Season!!!

A lot of people would say this is the most wonderful time of the year - football season!!

No one agrees more with this statement than Ted Palmisano, the President of Peddler's Son Produce. His passion for football has followed him through his life. He played football growing up in Wisconsin and later for Mankato State University as a guard on the offensive line. He then coached his son's Pop Warner Football team and became a spotter for his Scottsdale Community College football team. (Go Artichokes!)

As his son's football career came to an end, Ted still wanted a connection with the game and became involved with the Arizona Football Officials Association. This program educates referees for the various football programs in the state of Arizona. He is currently on his second year in the program and at level 4 of 5 for high school football games. His goal is to get to the 'Friday Night Lights' before the end of the season.

Ted feels the lessons he learns in football; the ups and downs, winning and losing and most of all, being part of a team, are what has helped him become a better business person.

So he asks you, "Are you ready for some football?"

New Legislation

If you have been following the legislation in Congress lately, you would have heard about the House bill that passed earlier in the month that gives the Government more power to regulate the produce business. Don’t be surprised to find out its going to cost you more for your produce.
Egg prices have already been affected as producers are hit by new costs as a result of food safety measures.
The FDA estimates that the new egg regulations will cost producers $81m annually. At around one cent per dozen, this is equivalent to a more than two percent increase in production costs.
Is the American consumer ready able and willing to have the cost of regulations passed onto them? Will this put a strain on the smaller shipper growers and force them out and create monopolies? Don’t get me wrong safety is good. I am interested in your feedback.

What is 21?

The poker game? The sum of the first six integers? (1+2+3+4+5=21) The retired number of Roberto Clemente from the Pittsburgh Pirates? The minimum legal age at which one can purchase and drink alcoholic beverages and gamble? Or the anniversary of Peddler's Son Produce?

Actually, all of the above! 21 years ago this month Ted Palmisano started Peddler's Son Produce. Ted began his business in the back of the pick-up truck. A few years later, Ted's brother, Joe joined him and now they serve over 300 restaurants, grocery stores and food related businesses. While they continue to grow into one of the most reputable produce houses in the valley, Ted and Joe are never too busy for you. You are always welcome at Peddler's Son Produce and they would love to give you a tour!
Stop by and say hello!

Green, it's not just for St Patrick's Day

As the citrus buyer at Peddler's Son, I'm often asked why fully ripe Valencia oranges sometimes appear green.

Sunkist Valencia oranges go through a natural process of 're-greening' as they ripen on the tree. This is due to chlorophyll returning to the peel. These oranges may actually be sweeter because they are extra-ripe.

Oranges will keep for up to 2 weeks in the refrigerator, but keep almost as well at room temperature with no wrapping. They yield more juice when at room temperature.

One more tip, if you put oranges in a hot oven before peeling them, no white fibers will be left on them.

So, go green! Enjoy the sweetest Valencia oranges now!

Bing!

Whether you like the golden-skinned sweet Rainier cherries or the dark Bing cherries, we have a big supply with great pricing. I've always been partial to the Rainier cherries. Mark, our buyer, tells me California cherries are the first fruit of the season so take advantage of this as their season is short. Cherries may also be frozen. Remember to remove the stems, wash and dry before placing in a freezer bag. They may be kept up to 3 months.

Now, all I need are some recipes for the Bing cherries. Anyone?!

How are we doing?

It's almost June?!! It seems like I just took down my Christmas lights and now I'm getting ready for my summer vacation. Well, we'd like to slow things down a bit and take some time to enjoy the things that are important to us, like you. Customers are what makes things tick around here and we want to make sure that we're listening. Would you take a couple of minutes and let us know how we're doing? I promise it will only take a minute or two and some lucky person will even win a couple of stylish, everyone-is-wearing, summer-staple Peddler's Son Produce shirts!

So, 'Lettuce Talk' and tell us how we're doing!

What's New In the Warehouse

Hey everybody! What's been going on in your lives? It's been a while since my last post and I know you're dying to hear what's been going on in the Peddler's Son Produce warehouse.

I hope everybody had a great Easter. Helen and I hosted a little dinner at her home for Easter. The food was great, as usual. We had a great time playing hosts. I also talked with my mom in California on Easter and realized how long I've been away from home. My goddaughter is growing up and I'm missing it, she made cupcakes for Easter. Last time that I saw her, she was so little. I miss my family but I think I've made Phoenix my home now.

I'm currently finishing up my last week of a class at the University of Phoenix. My final for the class is due this Sunday. No rest for the Produce Guru though, that next day, I begin two more classes; getting an education and working full time is a tiring process.

Doug has been off from work since last Friday and will be returning tomorrow. I guess he needed a little R&R. Paco and I have been holding down the warehouse without any major problems, a little teamwork and forward planning goes a long ways.

Bill Kroener, our Operations Manager, will be leaving us on Wednesday for a little surgery. We all wish him a speedy recovery with some good powerful drugs. While Bill is on the mend I will be trying to fill in for him. That's one of the great things about working at Peddler's Son Produce, everybody is very capable of stepping into other people's shoes. While I'm filling in for Bill, Paco and Doug will be stepping up their performance to cover some of my responsibilities.

We also have a new vendor for our mushroom line, Cardile Brothers. They have some of the best looking mushrooms that I've come across. If you appreciate a good mushroom, you'll appreciate a Cardile mushroom.

As always, if you have any produce related questions feel free to ask the Produce Guru...I'm here to help 602.253.3577 x113 or bridge@peddlersson.com.

You Would Never Have Guessed

Captain Kangaroo passed away on January 23, 2004 at age 76, which is odd, because he always looked to be 76. (DOB: 6/27/27 ) His death reminded me of the following story. Some people have been a bit offended that the actor, Lee Marvin, is buried in a grave alongside 3- and 4-star generals at Arlington National Cemetery. His marker gives his name, rank (PFC) and service (USMC). Nothing else. Here's a guy who was only a famous movie star who served his time, why the heck does he rate burial with these guys? Well, following is the amazing answer: I always liked Lee Marvin, but didn't know the extent of his Corps experiences.

In a time when many Hollywood stars served their country in the armed forces often in rear echelon posts where they were carefully protected, only to be trotted out to perform for the cameras in war bond promotions, Lee Marvin was a genuine hero. He won the Navy Cross at Iwo Jima . There is only one higher Naval award... The Medal Of Honor!

If that is a surprising comment on the true character of the man, he credits his sergeant with an even greater show of bravery.

Dialog from 'The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson': His guest was Lee Marvin Johnny said, 'Lee, I'll bet a lot of people are unaware that you were a Marine in the initial landing at Iwo Jima ..and that during the course of that action you earned the Navy Cross and were severely wounded.

'Yeah, yeah... I got shot square in the bottom and they gave me the Cross for securing a hot spot about halfway up Suribachi. Bad thing about getting shot up on a mountain is guys getting' shot hauling you down. But,Johnny, at Iwo I served under the bravest man I ever knew... We both got the Cross the same day, but what he did for his Cross made mine look cheap in comparison. That dumb guy actually stood up on Red beach and directed his troops to move forward and get the hell off the beach. Bullets flying by, with mortar rounds landing everywhere and he stood there as the main target of gunfire so that he could get his men to safety. He did this on more than one occasion because his men's safety was more important than his own life.

That Sergeant and I have been lifelong friends. When they brought me off Suribachi we passed the Sergeant and he lit a smoke and passed it to me, lying on my belly on the litter and said, 'Where'd they get you Lee?' 'Well Bob... If you make it home before me, tell Mom to sell the outhouse!' Johnny, I'm not lying, Sergeant Keeshan was the bravest man I ever knew.
The Sergeant's name is Bob Keeshan. You and the world know him as Captain Kangaroo.'

On another note, there was this wimpy little man (who just passed away) on PBS, gentle and quiet. Mr. Rogers is another of those you would least suspect of being anything but what he now portrays to our youth. But Mr. Rogers was a U.S. Navy Seal, combat-proven in Vietnam with over twenty-five confirmed kills to his name. He wore a long-sleeved sweater on TV, to cover the many tattoos on his forearm and biceps. He was a master in small arms and hand-to-hand combat, able to disarm or kill in a heartbeat

After the war Mr. Rogers became an ordained Presbyterian minister and therefore a pacifist. Vowing to never harm another human and also dedicating the rest of his life to trying to help lead children on the right path in life. He hid away the tattoos and his past life and won our hearts with his quiet wit and charm.

America's real heroes don't flaunt what they did; they quietly go about their day-to-day lives, doing what they do best. They earned our respect and the freedoms that we all enjoy.
Look around and see if you can find one of those heroes in your midst.

Often, they are the ones you'd least suspect, but would most like to have on your side if anything ever happened.

Take the time to thank anyone that has fought for our freedom.. With encouragement they could be the next Captain Kangaroo or Mr.Rogers.

Chocolate Facts

Chocolate is derived from cocoa beans. Bean is a vegetable. Sugar is derived from either sugar CANE or sugar BEETS. Both are plants, which places them in the vegetable category. Thus, chocolate is a vegetable. To go one step further, chocolate candy bars also contain milk, which is dairy. So candy bars are a health food. Chocolate-covered raisins, cherries, orange slices & strawberries all count as fruit, so eat as many as you want. Another important thing is to put "eat chocolate" at the top of your list of things to do today. That way, at least you'll get one thing done. Before I forget, a nice box of chocolates can provide your total daily intake of calories in one place. Now, isn't that handy? A special reminder: "Stressed" spelled backward is "desserts"!

Feast of St. Patrick and Other Holidays

As even the most non-religious person would know; Tuesday, March 17 is the Feast of St. Patrick (more commonly known as St. Patrick's Day). The past week at the warehouse has been busy with the receiving and shipping of green cabbage. We've been moving over 100 cases a day with more expected to move today and tomorrow morning. Red potatoes have also been on the move. Everybody is getting ready for that traditional meal of corned beef and cabbage with potatoes. Even though, as you read our weekly newsletter you will find that corned beef wasn't always the traditional fare of Ireland.

For my brothers at the bars who want to kick a little knowledge to impress the ladies, here are a couple of facts about St. Patrick:

1. At age 16 he was captured by Irish raiders and turned into a slave.
2. During his captivity, he was a shepherd.
3. Consecrated Bishop at age 43.
4. Was the person who divided the Country of Ireland into dioceses.

So, wherever you plan of enjoying your pint of green beer, Irish coffee, or Guinness tonight...remember, do it responsibly.

For some more off the wall facts...Today is "Lip Appreciation Day" and "National Bubble Week". So blow a few bubbles with those lips and if you really want to show some lip appreciation, give your love a romantic little peck everyday this week.

This is a picture of one of our newer hires here at Peddler's Son Produce, Pete "Chivo" Lombardo.

Michael "Doesn't Wave Hi To His Neighbors" Shea has also joined the Peddler's Son Produce Family.

If you've seen Russell "Russ Russ" Hall zooming around town with his "Tom Tom" in hand, he's probably trying to find an AJ's location.

Now it's time for some more fun stuff boys and girls...May the "Farm" be with you...always.

Organic Produce and Donating to Worthy Causes

In the age of organics some of my followers ask, "How does produce that is grown organically compare to the produce that we grew up eating?" The answer is...organically grown produce taste better because it is better. There is no loss of flavor, the color is not unusual, and the texture is the same. What's different is that you know you are doing something that is good for you. It's like taking that walk after dinner with a loved one, you feel better because you know that you've done something that is good for both of you. If you don't believe me about there being no difference in taste, just watch Hammy the Hamster...

I was asked a question this weekend by Helen's mother, "What does Peddler's Son Produce do when they can't sell some of the produce? What happens then?" The answer is that we donate any produce that is usable. We have a relationship with St. Mary's Food Bank, Phoenix Dream Center, and the West Valley Children's Crisis Center. Peddler's Son Produce uses many different techniques to control product waste but sometimes we have product that is no longer at its peak in quality. Between Ted and myself we also decide when a product is no longer at a quality that can be sold to our customers. At that time we decide which organization would benefit the most from our donation. If you are involved with a Non-Profit Organization and would like to become part of our donation list, please contact Peddler's Son Produce at 602.253.3577. You can ask for me, Bridge aka the Produce Guru.

With Sympathy

This post is in memory of the mother of one of our own employees, T Williams. T lost his mother this week. Our sympathies and prayers go out to T and his family. We know that his mother had been battling illness for some time now but that doesn't make the loss any easier.

With T's position here at Peddler's Son Produce, he's the one that has to hear about our families and their needs, and why we need one day off or another. We hope that T knows that we appreciate his skills of listening to our problems and that all of us are here to listen to his if he ever needs to get something off of his shoulders.

There will be a memorial this Sunday, March 8th at 1:00pm at the Avondale American Legion Post 61 for those that would like to attend.

From all of the Peddler's Son Family, "We love you T."

Are you down with OPP?

Those of you familiar with rap music might remember a hit song that Naughty By Nature had which included the lyrics, "Are you down with OPP?" We here at Peddler's Son Produce hope that you are not down with OPP, Other People's Produce. Peddler's Son Produce strives to bring you the best quality of product that is available.

Yesterday I was out to lunch with Helen in Avondale, we had decided on Mediterranean. We started with Babaganoosh for an appetizer, which was really good to my surprise. I had decided on the lamb kabobs and Helen had ordered a lamb gyro. The gyro came with sliced 6x6 tomatoes that were not ripe and just looked sad. The tomatoes looked as though they had underwent the "gassed green" process. This means that the picker tried to ripen the tomatoes with gas instead of letting them ripen on the vine naturally. So, I then proceeded to inform the waiter about my position as Peddler's Son Produce's resident Produce Guru. After showing the waiter the poor quality of the tomatoes, I inquired about his current produce supplier and asked if he knew if the restaurant was happy with that company. The waiter came back after talking with the manager and informed me that the manager was happy with where they go (a local supply depot) to buy their produce and was not looking to change. It just so happens that the depot where they buy their produce is a current customer of Peddler's Son Produce (but does not buy tomatoes from us). With the help of Mark Damato, Peddler's Son Produce's Vice President of Retail Sales, we confirmed that the supply depot had only "gassed" tomatoes in stock and not a single vine ripened tomatoe in the depot. See what happens when you are down with OPP? If you were a customer of Peddler's Son Produce, you could rely on quality produce being delivered to your door 6 days a week.

Whether it's Paco, Doug, or myself, when ever we unload product from a truck we are immediately scrutinizing it for quality issues. (That's Doug over here on the left conducting a temperature check on some cucumber crates this morning.) If there are any issues, the product does not make it past our receiving dock. Not only do we look for problems with the product itself, we also visually inspect the packages that the product is packed in, we inspect the pallets that the packages were shipped on, we inspect the interior cargo hold of the trailer the product was shipped in, and multiple temperature checks are conducted. One of the tests that I enjoy the most is the taste test. My consumption of fruits and vegetables has really grown since coming to work here at Peddler's Son Produce. It's not unusual to taste some Ugli fruit from Jamaica, seedless watermelon from Nogales, and Starfruit from Taiwan all in the same day.

If you own or manage a restaurant, eatery, or resort; stop on by the warehouse any day of the week and take a look at our quality control standards for yourself. You never know, maybe you'll get to taste test some mangosteens with me.

Ted and Joe Palmisano responding at different times independently of each other, both responded, "I will not be talking to Bridge for the entire duration of Lent."

HACCP Happenings

From scare tactics on the evening NEWS to scientific articles in JAMA, food safety is currently a very hot topic. We at Peddler's Son Produce have always felt that the safety of our customers and their clients is of the uppermost importance.

One of my titles here at Peddler's Son Produce is HACCP Manager. For those of you who do not know, HACCP stands for Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point. First developed for NASA by Pillsbury in the 1960s, HACCP is now accepted world-wide as the standard in the monitoring of food safety. By monitoring the acceptable critical control points in food production and storage, we can safely deliver our products to our customers with confidence. If there was a product recall, through proper record keeping and product identification codes, we can trace all of our delivered products and notify those customers who are at risk.

I take my role in food safety very seriously. I am certified by the National Registry of Food Safety Professionals as a Food Safety Manager, valid through May 5th, 2013. I am also registered with Maricopa County Environmental Health as a Food Safety Manager, valid through May 5th, 2013. I receive e-mails throughout the day from various agencies and academic institutions concerning the very latest up-to-date information on food safety. Just some of the sites that I visit on a daily basis include: HACCPALLIANCE.org, FDA.gov, SCIENCEDIRECT.com, and FOODSAFETY.kdu.edu. A wealth of knowledge can be gained by doing a little bit of research when it comes to food safety. Fortunately for our customers and for my faithful readers, I do it for you.

If you happen to have a food safety related question, feel free to give me a call. I can be contacted, at work 602.423.6369 x113, or by email bridge@peddlersson.com. Enjoy your fruits and veggies, and stay safe.

What's New At Peddler's Son Produce?

My fans have asked the question, "What's new at Peddler's Son Produce?"

The answer...we are moving towards going GREEN.

We at Peddler's Son Produce are making the conscious effort to help our environment. We have joined up with Allied Waste and started a recycling program. Instead of just having a trash container, we also now have a recycling container on our grounds. In our warehouse we have brand new bright yellow recycling containers so that our employees can segregate recyclables from regular waste. It's really surprising to see how much recycle material is accumulated each day in our warehouse. I also have an appointment scheduled for next Monday with a supplier of greener, more energy efficient lighting. It's rumored that the sales staff has cut back to showering only twice a week in an effort to conserve water. (I won't be investigating that rumor.)

Today I actually got to leave the warehouse for a little while. I enjoyed a great lunch with Jill, our Marketing Director. She had to pay up for a bet that was made during the college football season. We went to Scott's Generation Deli on 7th Street and Missouri. This was my second time visiting the establishment. My friend Candace took me there the first time. On my first visit I had the Monte Cristo, which was very good. Today I had the french dip, which was excellent. A lot of meat and a hearty au jous. Jill tried to tackle the tuna sub and only got half of it down. Funny, that even though Jill now works for a produce company, she ordered her sandwich without tomatoes.

For those of you that follow my life outside of work. I had a great time at the Art Laboe Love Jam last Friday with Helen. Helen and I have been spending a lot of time together and she's a real special person. I hope to write more about her in my blog, so stay tuned.

Random Acts of Kindness Week

What a great week! This week, February 9-15, is National Random Acts of Kindness Week.

Don't know what it is? Here's a quote from their site The Random Acts of Kindness™ Foundation inspires people to practice kindness and to “pass it on” to others. We provide free educational and community ideas, guidance, and other resources to kindness participants through our website at www.actsofkindness.org.

The Karma Cooler provides some good suggestions if you don't know what to do. My favorite example is from Improve Everywhere. A few of their 'agents' got together and gave 'high fives' to the New Yorkers riding the subway to work on a Monday morning! Even this tough group broke into smiles by this small gesture. My only suggestion is that it should have been a 'fist bump'. 'High Fives' are sooooo 90s as I've learned from my friends here at Peddler's Son.

So, here's to a randomly fun week of kindness. Pass it on!

Monday Afternoon

Here we go again, another Monday at the shop. Doug and I have been holding down the fort with Paco vacationing in Las Vegas since Friday afternoon. Last Saturday and today were pretty heavy receiving and shipping days but we got the job done. Paco will be back tomorrow, most likely with some stories that he will have no proof of actually happening.

On Wednesday we are having our big management meeting, that should be fun. Communication around here has been improving be leaps and bounds because of our meetings, which makes everything easier. The only thing that I don't understand is...Why are we having the meetings on a Wednesday? That is the most important day in the warehouse, it's our weekly inventory day.

Anyways...it finally happened...I now own a pink polo shirt. I think I can pull off the pink. Besides, it is for a special occasion. I have a date for the Art Laboe Love Jam Concert on Friday the 13th. My friend Helen and I will be grooving to the oldies that night. You might remember Helen, I met her New Year's morning at the IHOP in Avondale.

I wish everybody a very special week of love and my you spend Valentine's Day with someone special. Until next Monday, fresh vegetables and sweet fruits to you all.

The Day After The Big Game

So what if the Cardinals didn't win? They put on a great game with the Steelers. I don't know about anybody else but my losses were bigger than my winnings. I now owe my best friend John, a Steelers fan, an authentic NFL Steelers helmet.

The Peddler's Son Produce's gathering spot to watch the game was at Eli's in Scottsdale. We all had a good time but Bigg Ted had a little more fun than most. From inspiring the crowd to falling while standing on the bar, he was our fearless leader. Ted also had some exercise running around the length of the bar trying to get the "wave" going, he was hilarious. To be part of Ted's posse, he came up with the idea of wearing those black glare stickers under your eyes. We all looked like idiots.

I also remember Ted getting caught up in the celebrating and giving me a kiss. Is that sexual harassment because he's my boss?

All in all it was a great game and day. The celebrating came to an abrupt stop during the ride home though. John and I were heading south on the 51 when I decided it was time to pull a "Teen Wolf" and go "surfing". Well as I was heading out the window, DPS swerves in behind us and lights us up. Since John and I are responsible when it comes to partying, the only ticket given out was a "no seat belt" ticket to me. Might as well add the fine to my losings for the night.

January Is Almost Gone

Can you believe that we are already entering the last week of January? Around here in Phoenix the talk as we enter February is about the Cardinals. What an amazing playoff run they have had. After the debacle in towards the end of the season in Philadelphia, would anyone have thought that the Cardinals would be in the Super Bowl. You're a liar if you said yes.

This weekend some of us from work went out and showed support to T Williams again. He and the band Borderline were the entertainment for the steak fry given by the American Legion Post 61 Avondale.

The next upcoming event out there will be for Super Bowl Sunday. I might be trying to stay a little closer to Phoenix for those festivities though.

Last Friday night was a little bit of a let down. Karaoke was called off because the guy who runs it, his mom was in the hospital. We all wish her a speedy recovery.

I can't believe I'm going to admit to this...I watched the movie "Prime" last night with my friend Candace. The movie was actually not that bad. There, I said it. I wanted to watch "Nacho Libre" but was outvoted.

January 19th, 2008

Good Monday to you all.

Well, the karaoke beat goes on. Last Friday it was a tribute to Sir Mix-A-Lot with "Baby Got Back", Digital Underground with "The Humpty Dance", a messed up version of MC Hammer's "2 Lgit 2 Quit, and Snoop's "Gin and Juice". Everybody had fun though, that's all the matters. Like the saying goes...What happens at karaoke, stays at karaoke.

Being Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we all need to revisit the dream and make it a reality. I don't want to get too much into race and all that, so you all know what you need to do to make this world a better place to live in, so just do it.

Today is also the celebration of the birthday of one of the greatest poets ever to live, Edgar Allen Poe. Go and get a copy of any of his poems, sit back, start reading, and enjoy. If my 8th grade English teacher, Mrs. Brug, heard me say that, she would drop dead in her tracks.

If you had this holiday off, enjoy. If you were like me and had to work, try to get off early like me and go home to rest.

PHXRailFood

You must visit this Blog! http://www.phxrailfood.com/ If you want to feel good; start the new year off correct and support your local community and it's restaurants. That is what the PHXRailFood Blog is doing and it is refreshing to see that someone gets it. Being from Chicago and participating in Pub Crawls and Block Parties that support local restaurants, it is nice to see that kind of community start here in Phoenix. These hard working individuals that we call restaurantuers who work when we play need our support during these times. Not only an economic downturn but 2 years or whatever it was of street closerures and construction. Remember to keep it in the community and support your local restaurnt next time your out.

Monday's Blog Post, Missed By All

Wow! I actually have people that read this blog. Two different people have contacted me to find out why I didn't post anything yesterday. Truth in the matter, I was busy. I was pretty busy today too but I thought I could make some time for my fans.

A little update, I had a blast this past weekend. I played bingo with my friend Anna and her family at the American Legion. I won $60 but Anna's mom was the big winner with a total winnings of $500. After bingo we went into the bar and I made a fool out of myself singing karaoke. I sang two songs, "Rapper's Delight" by the Sugarhill Gang and "It Takes Two" by MC Rob Base and DJ Easy Rock. I had the place jumping with the help of Anna's cousin's boyfriend, Jose. Thanks Jose. I also want to thank Special Kizzard and Alizzard, aka Kristian and Aliza from work, for coming out and supporting me. I think this coming Friday I will be trying not to butcher a Beatles' tune and maybe something from BelBivDevoe.

Today at the warehouse we had a visit from a representative of the Catalina Restaurant Group. I feel that things went very well. I need to get back with the representative about some updated pathogen testing but other than that, it was a pleasant meet and greet.

Just a reminder to all of you, January 24th the Peddler's Son Produce family will be out in Avondale again to cheer on our very own T Williams. T, if you don't already know is the rhythm guitar player for the band Borderline and they will be playing at the American Legion Post 61 Avondale on the 24th. There will also be a steak fry on the same night. So come on out and join us. I think the steak fry only cost $10 -$12.

For all of you that wish to see me out on the town, not only will I be singing karaoke next Friday at the American Legion Post 1 Phoenix, I will also be out Saturday night to catch the new movie "Notorious". "Notorious" is the biography of one of the greatest rappers of all time, Notorious BIG aka Biggie Smalls. If you're into Hip Hop, this is a must see movie. Post a comment or give me a ring, 6024236369, and I'll let you know more details for that night.

Forget the apple, take an Arizona orange a day!

One of my responsibilities here at Peddler's Son Produce is buying all of our citrus. This time of year means we're into the Arizona citrus season and you can't get any fresher citrus. Did you know that unlike other citrus producing regions, most of the citrus grown in the West is destined for the fresh fruit market rather than processed for juice?

Currently, all of our Fairchild tangerines, Minneola tangelos, oranges, and lemons are from the East Valley. This week, we'll be shipping Arizona grapefruit. While the citrus is locally grown, it all comes under the brand name of Sunkist. We've had a long-time relationship with Sunkist and have really appreciated the quality that comes with all of their citrus.

Fairchild tangerines are in the market from late October through mid March. These tangerines add color and taste great in coleslaw and tuna salad. You may store them in the refrigerator up to 7 days.

My favorite citrus is the Minneola tangelo. I think it has the best flavor and it's easy to peel. It’s in season is from late December through April. They will keep a day or two at room temperature.

Navel oranges are in season November through May. These oranges are considered the 'eating oranges'. You may freeze orange juice, reamed-out shells and peels for future use, but never an entire orange.

Western lemons differ from other smooth-skinned lemons with a fine, textured skin and are heavy for their size. You can refrigerate lemon wedges in a covered container and they will stay fresh for up to 4 days.

A medium grapefruit is equivalent to 10-12 sections or 2/3 cup juice. Store them in a cool, well-ventilated area on a rack off of the floor. The best temperature to keep grapefruit stored is between 50-55 degrees

So as Arizona citrus season comes into full swing, maybe you'll find some of this information useful or at least interesting. Just remember, as Conan O'Brien says, 'If life gives you lemons, make some kind of fruity juice.'

Happy "National Thank God It's Monday!" Day

Who would have ever thought that there would be a holiday to celebrate Mondays, the most hated day of the week? I have always hated Mondays...until today. Today is the best day ever! A simple reply I received this morning, to a text message that I sent last night, is all it took. The bell peppers smell sweeter, the warehouse doesn't seem as cold, and T even looks a little prettier today. Could it be love? Stay tuned and find out soon.

First Day Back After The New Year Holiday 2009

Welcome to 2009!!!

To all of my followers, I hope you had as much fun as I did for New Year's. As I informed you in a previous post, T Williams (our Facilities Manager) and the band he plays in (Borderline) were the entertainment for the New Year's Party at the American Legion Post 61 Avondale. Myself and three other guys from work attended the show and had a great time. The band was great with their steroid pumped renditions of old and new country. T took the time to introduce us to his bandmates, which was cool. My favorite was the closing song, Neon Moon, I can picture myself in my own version of the video with a black Stetson on. What the made the night enjoyable, besides the music, was the people of Post 61. Everybody was friendly, there were no problems due to alcohol, and it only takes fifty cents to play a game of pool.

Needless to say the guys and I closed down the place. After we headed up Dysart to the IHOP for breakfast. Some of us needed it more than others (right Andy?). While waiting for a table we met Sue, Helen (my favorite), and Suresh. Our party grew from seven to ten, just like that. Sue made Gabe's night even better, Gabe tried valiantly to flirt with her over the entire breakfast. I tried throwing myself at Helen but she might have been on a date with Suresh (I think that's how you spell his name). The girls asked what we did for a living and one thing led to another and that led to this..."I'd like to give a big Peddler's Son Produce shout out to Sue and Helen for being such good sports and putting up with our loud mouths over breakfast." Oh yeah, Helen, call me 602.423.6369 (wink wink).

If you'd like to share your New Year's happenings, comment to this post. Have a good weekend everybody and if you're in the Phoenix metro area tonight, I'll be doing karaoke at the American Legion Post 1 Phoenix. Drop on by and cheer me on.
